Raúl
Raúl’s fascination with magic started at an early age when he saw magic performed on TV via the Ed Sullivan Show and Spanish language programs, being that he was learning English at the time, what magicians he saw he does not recall. He must have seen Mark Wilson and Doug Henning on TV but it was Tony Curtis in the movie Houdini, who captured his interest in magic.
His grandfather and father were not magicians nor was anyone else in his family, no one brought him a magic kit nor took him to a magic store. It was during his university days at USC, where he saw the opportunity to use magic as a motivational tool in teaching elementary age students. Magic was used to get his students to write with simple props and no sleight of hand effects in the classroom. “I never thought of myself as a magician. I brought the props at Hollywood Magic but no one talked magic to me there since I was purchasing props rather than magic effects. I was self taught until I met Larry Tash, an LAUSD administrator, who discovered my magical talents. He encouraged me to use magic in leading staff development with teachers and administrators in using magical effects to make connections with teaching, learning and leading. Larry introduced me to Jeff Ezell who owned Mind Over Magic in Burbank. I studied with Jeff, who along with shop members, who encouraged me to take the next step in magic – become a member of the Academy of Magical Arts aka the Magic Castle.”
Raúl knew of the Magic Castle from the Ralph Story shows on CBS television. Larry Tash eventually sponsored Raúl to join the Academy of Magical Arts. He returned to using magic as a high school and middle school administrators with students.
To further develop, his magical presentation, he began to perform stand up comedy around the Los Angeles community, having performed at the Ice House, Comedy Store Hollywood & La Jolla, Flappers, Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, Ha Ha Café, Hollywood Hotel and La Fonda. He has competed in the Fresh Faces of Comedy contest at the Ha Ha Café, appearing in their finals. The Up and Comers comedy contest at Jon Lovitz as well as the Eagle Rock Comedy Festival. He appears regularly at the weekly Saturday afternoon family who “Two Milk Minimum” at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank. He produced the Saturday Two Milk Minimum at the Claremont Flappers Club. Raúl believes it is more important to entertain rather than fool an audience
He is an active member of International Brotherhood of Magicians, IBM Ring 21 and Society of American Magicians, SAM Assembly 290, having served as board member. He is a member in good standing of the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA) aka Magic Castle serving on its Outreach and Castle Knight committees.
